Cozy Winter Wonderland Microwedding

bride and groom in the snow

Lindsey and Christian were set to be married March 21, 2020 after 2 years of planning their dream wedding. The flowers were ordered, the food count was in, and family & friends were getting ready to get on flights to come celebrate as they were to say “I do”. Then the whole world stopped. COVID put a sudden halt to the day we had been imagining for so long.

After two venue changes, and with the unknown of when large gatherings would be allowed again, they decided to proceed with a micro wedding in Lake Tahoe. They had 25 of their closest family members there as they exchanged their vows. It was an intimate, cozy winter wonderland, and although not what they had originally pictured for themselves, it ended up being more than they could have ever imagined.

COVID has been exceptionally difficult for California wedding vendors, but we have so many incredible vendors in San Diego that have been there for their couples trying to have a wedding during these difficult times.  A perfect example is Savanna the make-up and hairstylist, Joe Cardillo and Iron & Fern all stuck with the bride throughout her 2 prior venue cancellations due to COVID restrictions that happened in the beginning. These vendors also decided to travel to the third venue for a micro wedding.  The bride is also the niece of Prema from pbStyle Photography who was there for the couple and found it to be one of the most emotional weddings to edit in her career.

Micro Wedding

bride and groom, just married

Mariah and Reggie’s wedding was a mix of modern boho and fun. Mariah loves pampas grass and knew she wanted that as the focal point. They had a huge pampas arrangements at the alter and as a hanging arrangement and it sure was a wow! They didn’t want to go too over board, so they kept the bridesmaid and groomsmen attire modern and clean.

Their reception had some corky boho decor which highlighted her personality. Their cake was such a fun twist. Very corky and bright colors! Mariah swears it tasted amazing!!!

Although Mariah & Reggie were able to keep their original wedding date, COVID did affect their wedding planning.  Coasterra was outdoors and accommodating while at the same time, being really careful with making sure there was a set seating chart so households that were not living together were 6 feet apart.  Their original reception site closed so they found an alternative, but had to cut their guest list in half.  As with all catering these days, buffets with people serving themselves are no longer an option. And of course there was plenty of hand sanitizer everywhere and mask wearing guidelines.

Mariah’s advice for planning a wedding during a pandemic, “Do what is best for you and your family! If you have family that you really really want/need to be there, but are high risk for COVID then Yes postpone. Most of my family agreed to the date and some did not because of COVID because they were unsure. However, those people did not stop me. Not saying I did’t care about them. I just knew that I wanted to get it done. I didn’t care if it was a small wedding or big. If you are fine with some people not coming and want to keep the wedding this year, then do it! That’s what I did. I knew lots of people would not want to come. I still had so many people there. I invited 65 people and 57 people showed up.”

Vanessa and Johnny’s wedding was romantic and fall inspired in the garden at Twin Oaks. With the tall trees and twinkle lights, they were able to really feel all the fall vibes. Camille didn’t want what was popular or traditional for their wedding, she envisioned a beautiful blend of Bohemian chic with Moroccan touches. The ceremony under a canopy of deep orange, brown and copper vines gave a sepia effect for the unique arch with hanging lanterns providing an ideal backdrop. The bridesmaids were dressed in a deep rust gowns and their bouquets in dark, rich fall colors added to the ambience.

Next One in India!

Since Shawna is from San Diego and Jaideep is from India, this is the first wedding they had here. Later they were able to celebrate with a second wedding in India. They embraced all the traditional American wedding traditions and incorporated a travel theme since they have traveled to 25 countries together. Christina and Andy booked Bali Hai thinking it was the ideal place to get married, since that was where they had met. Unfortunately, they were going to have to wait longer than they wanted for an available date. Wedding Inspiration from a Classic Movie

The look and feel of this wedding was actually inspired by the 1954 version of ‘Sabrina’ – with the backdrop of a beautiful San Diego sunset! The ceremony was held in the Garden and was very personal, a close friend of the family was their officiant, and their female friends and family members shared in the Persian sofreh part of the evening as well. Everyone enjoyed cocktail hour with beautiful flamenco guitar music and firelight before heading to the ballroom reception. There they enjoyed great food, prayers and toasts from their family, and lots and lots of dancing.

Coronavirus can’t stop love!

bride and groom, wedding ceremony

Crystal and Joey’s original plan was to have their wedding at the Manchester Grand Hyatt in San Diego July 4, 2020.  They had already postponed it once before and were determined to make it happen this time. With so many of their guests being from out of town, they decided instead to host their wedding virtually from their home to keep everyone safe. They had most of the traditional elements of any wedding, a short, but sweet ceremony exchanging vows, first dance and cake cutting. However, they had to make a few adjustments to make things work. Their wedding arch was made out of a squat rack decorated by the bride with flowers. Crystal had a dress reveal with her bridesmaids, her mother and the mother of the groom by zoom. Speeches from the bride’s family, the grooms family, Matron of Honor and the two co- Best Men had to be pre-recorded.

After the live event concluded, they took pictures on their property outside and with their handsome dog, Kudo. Having Kudo running around was one of their favorite parts during their virtual wedding. He dressed in his best fur, and totally stole the show! They had a really fun time and were truly able to capture and share their love with their families and friends.

bride and groom with best dog

We asked Crystal and Joey if they were happy with their decision to have a virtual wedding.

“Yes, we are very happy with our decision! Most of our guests were traveling internationally, as well as from the east coast, and with border closures, this way we could include everyone from a safe distance, ensuring zero health risks for all. At the end of the day, we considered that the main point of getting married is to celebrate our love for one another, regardless of life’s obstacles or challenges.”

Here’s their advice for any couples out their considering switching to a virtual wedding:

“The advice that we would give a couple who is considering a virtual wedding, is to remember that the day is about you two and your love. Nothing will be perfect, apart from the moment you celebrate your love for each other, wherever that may be. We felt as though we would feel lonely having a virtual wedding, but we learned that it turned out to be quite the opposite. We got to invite 5 times the amount of guests that our original venue could occupy. We also felt that the virtual wedding allowed the camera crew to get different angles and close ups to make it feel much more intimate, and give every guest a front row seat – kind of like a basketball, sometimes sitting at home on your couch watching the big screen is much better than being stuck in the nosebleeds, not knowing what the score is.”

Destination Wedding at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park

The San Diego Zoo Safari Park was an adventurous location for Karan and Trenton’s destination wedding.  They exchanged their vows with exotic birds in the background, took pictures with a slew of animals and enjoyed a “party animal” themed reception. Afterwards, their guests were treated to a safari ride through the park.

Magical Industrial Wedding

Courtney & Kelsey’s wedding was the perfect blend of simplicity and natural beauty. Their main focus was creating an atmosphere where all felt welcomed and comfortable while still honoring the seriousness and momentousness of the occasion. Working with Luce Loft’s intrinsically intimate setting and adding the magic of greenery and lights was the ideal spot. Using live plants and lighting juxtaposed against an industrial setting really brought together the essence of their relationship.

More of a party than your typical wedding.

What made Lisa & Ami’s wedding unique was venturing away from some of the “forced” elements that happens during typical weddings. They wanted to have a wedding that allowed people to move around and be free to enjoy themselves. They had a bar opened as guests entered and instead of a sit down dinner they had three food stations focusing on their cultural backgrounds, Italian and Indian, and tacos – their favorite food! And rather than a wedding cake, they chose to have a lavish dessert table and cheese station.

Classic and Romantic with Modern Touches

The wedding was classic and romantic, but had elements that made it modern day like the white washed chiavari chairs to the luxurious floral boxes and gold tapered candles. From the white, crisp, delicate blooms, blush pink bridesmaid dresses and the classic tux this sophisticated wedding style was timeless. The bride loved these geode bookends so much that she went to multiple stores to find enough to turn them into her table numbers.

Danielle and Matthew chose Coasterra since it is on the water, has the most breathtaking view of downtown San Diego, and was most unique venue they saw in San Diego. It was the perfect setting for the sleek and modern wedding they had envisioned. with an Urban Vibe

From the start, Lydia and Gene knew they wanted their wedding to be intimate and true to themselves. They also wanted to host the wedding as a way to celebrate with their loved ones and thank them for the role they’ve played in their lives.  Their wedding was rustic and romantic in decor, but located downtown, so it still had an urban vibe that fit them well as a couple.

Nicole’s favorite colors are purple and orange and her favorite flower is the calla lily, so they were used throughout their wedding day. The vibe for their day was coastal classic with palm leaves and orchids down the aisle. They wanted their guests to relax with toes in the sand and a drink in their hand. As a symbol of their love, they took pictures on the beach with a rainbow smoke bomb. Love is love!

The Polynesian-themed wedding featured elements to honor the couple’s Chinese, Jewish, and Hawaiian heritages.

Including a ceremony that concluded with a traditional breaking of the glass, and a reception with Asian/Hawaiian-inspired cuisine. The overall theme of the event was “Team Juslie’s Marathon for Life” to celebrate their love for running and endurance athletics; the table placards were designed to look like running bibs. Breathtaking Views from Coasterra

groom dipping bride

Most of Nicole and Alex’s guests were from out of town and enjoyed the incredible scenic views from Coasterra. So much that they had a hard time getting people to move from the outdoor cocktail hour to inside for dinner. Everyone loved that they could float in and out of the ballroom to take a break from dancing and enjoy the romantic views outside.

Persian Jewish Blend

This wedding was a blend of Sarah’s Persian culture and Benjamin’s Jewish background. They were able to find a great rabbi, who not only performed the Jewish ceremony, but incorporated aspects of the Persian wedding ceremony. It’s a true testament to the diversity of Southern California and the fact that two cultures can coexist and complement one another. The blending continued at the reception where they danced until the early hours to American hits, Persian pop, in addition to Jewish music such as the hora.

Classic Coastal Elegance

bride, groom, wedding dress, tux, bouquet

Naomi & Brandon’s wedding was very soft and beachy – the feel brought the Carlsbad coast into their wedding. It was important to the bride and groom to embrace the surroundings and bring the vibe into the wedding. Coastal elegance was the perfect theme because the bride and groom love the beach! The soft hues of purple (the bride’s favorite color) provided the elegant feel.

Sexy, Sassy, Tasteful Ways to Excite Your Man

What should I get my man for my wedding present or our anniversary?

I’m thinking something for his eyes only. How about something that breathes seduction, entices his desire for me and empowers me to be a sassy supermodel for a day?

It’s a gift. It’s an empowerment for women. It’s a venture into a realm of which many women have not gone – one of daring, throwing caution to the wind and, well…I want to surprise MY MAN!

Equinox Photo

“We like this to involve all of the senses. Light candles, start with calm jazz music and build toward some sexy, clubby feel, perhaps add a little champagne…sexy lingerie they bring from home…most girls have never done anything like this,” explains Heather Middleton, owner and photographer from Shadow Boudoir.

You’re creating a pre-wedding gift for him…something of a teaser for the Big Day. It’s a pre-wedding present he finds on his pillow the night before the wedding.

Equinox Photo

It’s a fun present to remind him of what a good choice he’s made and what’s to come. It’s a chance to show off how sassy or sexy you are…just for him.

It’s not at all sleazy and it’s not really a new concept, either. It’s an evolution from the glamour shots of 20 years ago. It’s natural, classy, yet somewhat sassy, depending on the nature of the bride. It’s not necessarily nude, either. Much of this can be considered art.

“Why not kick off the marriage with a sexy piece of art that is only shared in the privacy of your own bedroom,” offers Marissa Boucher from The Boudoir Divas.

Sometimes a theme is incorporated into the shoot. Perhaps he’s a firefighter and the bride borrows a firefighter’s helmet or his boots for the shoot. Maybe he’s a graduate of Purdue and she wears a Purdue scarf. Several different outfits can be worn during the shoots.

Boudoir studios offer different sets they can create for your particular tastes. The average shoot is 2 hours in length, is completely private and usually involves about four different outfit changes. This, of course, varies based on your package. Packages range from $275 on up, depending on the end product (album, framed pictures, calendars, etc.).

Studio Carré

Traditionally, the final product is an album for his eyes only. Some albums are 5×7’s and about 10 images. Some albums are larger and can be coffee table in size. They can even create calendars for his private desktop office eyes only.

Diane Erth, a recent bride, decided on a special three year anniversary present for her beloved husband. Diane wanted a fun idea he would never expect. She had 2 8×10’s and 1 5×7 made by Shadow Boudoir and the rest put on a disc so she could make her own album at a reduced cost.

“You’re only young once, so why not go for it! It’s a once in a lifetime thing and you’ll have fun doing it. I was even able to make a toned down picture of myself and our precious cat that he can display safely on his desk at work,” shares Erth.

There is much to be said for the comfort factor in attempting this type of shoot. How do you strip for a stranger or pose sexily in lingerie in front of a camera for the first time? It’s not as easy as a shoot in the park.

“I’d already worked well with Heather at Shadow Boudoir. I loved her. She already shot my wedding. Our personalities fit. Being comfortable with someone shows in your pictures,” says Erth.

Many times the comfort factor is built after an engagement session. This allows for a lot of bonding time between the photographer and couple. The photographer can get to know the couple personally – where they went to school, how they met, where their parents live, what they do for a living and so on. This builds a friendship and, ultimately, a comfort between the couple and the photographer.

The bride, ultimately, feels more of a closeness to the photographer and an ease in front of the lens. Of course, when it comes time for the boudoir shoot, things are easier.

“We discuss ahead of time what they are and are not comfortable doing. Some want cute, coy, frilly and suggestive and others venture to darker colors and semi-naughty. Sometimes…what you can’t see, is more fun.

Lighting, shading, props and such all come in to play to help the bride reach the ultimate objective: a comfortable shoot and quality pictures that flatter. While some boudoir studios offer props, and all provide the technical lighting, it’s usually up to the bride to bring their wardrobe.

Face it, not every one is a model. Boudoir photographers can make you feel like one, though. You can enter their dream studio. You can also shoot from the comfort of your own home. Natural light is great. Photographers love shooting from an environment you are most comfortable in. This is where you will be most relaxed.

“I got a day of pampering and a supermodel experience during my shoot and now we both have these beautiful pictures to enjoy! Thank you for making the experience so comfortable…what a great studio…what a fun day for me,” exclaims recent bride Liz S about her experience with Boucher.

Bob Hoffman Photography & Video

Here’s a novel idea – bachelorette parties. Boucher has been successfully promoting these at their studio. They take four or more girls and give them each a boudoir shoot (one at a time, of course) during a four or five hour session. It becomes more of a party, too, with high energy music, music videos, beverages and snacks. Even a professional make-up and hair person can be brought in so each girl gets the supermodel treatment.

Valentine’s Day is also a huge time for this type of gift. Ladies can also register for a gift certificate for the bride’s shower. Now that would be a surprise gift!

“When all is said and done, the pictures are just the icing on the cake. A week later, you are still on a boudoir high. You feel very good about yourself,” coaches Middleton.

Empower yourself ladies. You can have a supermodel experience like the models in Maxim magazine. You can give him his very own Vegas pin-up of yourself. Drift away for a few hours and imagine yourself in a famous Hurrell pose.

It’s not just a gift for him…it’s really for you.
