Not what they had originally planned,

but still an intimate & romantic wedding

bride and groom walking hand in hand

Originally, Karla & Christian had planned to have their wedding in France, June 2021, but thanks to COVID, they had to postpone it.  Obviously Karla was devastated since she was like most women who have dreamed of their weddings since they were little girls.  Eventually she faced the reality that it was out of her control. So instead of just dwelling on all the things that went wrong, they decided to focus on their love and have a small civil ceremony with the people closest to their hearts and to keep their excitement alive for a church service/reception in France next summer (2022).

Christian’s sister  is a survivor from the 2016 Brussels airport terrorist attack. From that accident, she lost both her legs below the knee at the young age of 17 and has not been able to stand up since then.

It was an incredible moment they experienced at their ceremony. She had worked so, so hard to wear an exoskeleton which allowed her to stand at their wedding and walk towards Karla with it while she got ready for the wedding as well as standing along side the family in most of the pictures. Karla thinks that made her cry more than the actual wedding!

Bayfront tropical garden wedding

bride and groom walkingKelli and Clay wanted to celebrate along the San Diego bay where they could marry the open-air feel of nature with a chic and clean wedding vibe. Their enclosed garden ceremony was filled with the most joyful and personalized ceremony from Clay’s grandfather that had everyone overflowing with smiles and laughter. The couple incorporated their personalities through sweet treats like custom labeled Hershey’s Kisses, a sweet painting of their beloved furry family member Frankie, and powerful song choices like “All For You” by OAR and “Signed, Sealed, Delivered” by Stevie Wonder.

From their vows where they each mentioned Kelli’s very okay obsession with Taco Bell to how they got the epic reception dance party started with glow batons! You never saw them sitting down for too long, instead they spent time truly being present with their guests making joyous memories all night long.

Third time was charming for this micro-wedding at an intimate Spanish style casita.

bride and groom with wedding party

Allison & Aaron found their venue when COVID caused them to go a different direction. Like many couples over the past year they rolled with it and came up with a plan B. But then again they had last minute cancellations due to COVID in February and had to try again. With a wedding date of April 10th they needed to find another venue and FAST. Allison searched airbnb and found a very cute Spanish casita named Villa Francesca. She reached out to see if the owner would allow a wedding. Luck would have it that they were just starting out trying to market the home as a wedding venue, but due to COVID had to pumped the breaks on promoting the space.

wedding invitation, wedding ringsThey got back to her so fast and said, “it was funny she had asked and yes, yes she could get married there!” She was so enthusiastic when they spoke, it gave them hope that they would still have the wedding of their dreams. Having downsized from 100 people Allison wanted to make their now 26 person wedding feel extra special, so they decided to splurge on the details and believes it was so worth it. With the help of her incredible wedding planner they were able to get married and created the most beautiful space. People are still telling them how beautiful their wedding was and how much fun they had.

Cozy Winter Wonderland Microwedding

bride and groom in the snow

Lindsey and Christian were set to be married March 21, 2020 after 2 years of planning their dream wedding. The flowers were ordered, the food count was in, and family & friends were getting ready to get on flights to come celebrate as they were to say “I do”. Then the whole world stopped. COVID put a sudden halt to the day we had been imagining for so long.

After two venue changes, and with the unknown of when large gatherings would be allowed again, they decided to proceed with a micro wedding in Lake Tahoe. They had 25 of their closest family members there as they exchanged their vows. It was an intimate, cozy winter wonderland, and although not what they had originally pictured for themselves, it ended up being more than they could have ever imagined.

COVID has been exceptionally difficult for California wedding vendors, but we have so many incredible vendors in San Diego that have been there for their couples trying to have a wedding during these difficult times.  A perfect example is Savanna the make-up and hairstylist, Joe Cardillo and Iron & Fern all stuck with the bride throughout her 2 prior venue cancellations due to COVID restrictions that happened in the beginning. These vendors also decided to travel to the third venue for a micro wedding.  The bride is also the niece of Prema from pbStyle Photography who was there for the couple and found it to be one of the most emotional weddings to edit in her career.

First Wedding in San Diego –

Next One in India!

Since Shawna is from San Diego and Jaideep is from India, this is the first wedding they had here. Later they were able to celebrate with a second wedding in India. They embraced all the traditional American wedding traditions and incorporated a travel theme since they have traveled to 25 countries together. Even their cake topper was a mini Shawna and Jaideep sitting on a globe.

Even during Covid

Love Never Fails

bride and groom walking

The months before Ciera & Bruce’s wedding were some of the most overwhelming and stressful in most of her life. She felt like she didn’t even recognize her own wedding plans and was grieving the wedding the wedding that she had dreamed of.  Ironically, the wedding ended up exactly what they would have wanted.

wedding invitation, wedding ring, flowers

They loved their more intimate setting and that they could be fully present in the day. During their little dinner reception, nearly everyone in their families did a speech or toast, sharing funny inside jokes and teary gratitude that they had found each other. These beautiful moments, of which were Ciera’s favorite from the day, wouldn’t have happened in their original big reception. It really ended up being a perfect day for them.

invitation, wedding rings

bridal bouquets, sunflowers, roses

In Ciera’s brother’s speech, he added a quote from Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows that just really summed it up.

Ginny – “Seems silly, doesn’t it? A wedding. Given everything that’s going on.”
Harry – “Maybe that’s the best reason to have it. Because of everything that’s going on.”

What made you decide to not postpone your original wedding plans, but keep your wedding date & make it smaller?
“We felt from very early on that we wanted to get married on our intended day no matter what. The important part of the event was marrying each other and that was what we kept as our compass. Early on in April, before we even knew the pandemic would affect our wedding, Bruce’s Dad (who was unable to travel to our wedding) had encouraged us to still proceed with the ceremony as best we could. He said that terrible things have happened in history and people still got married. His blessing meant so much to us and helped us proceed with our date. While we considered postponing our full wedding plan, we felt that we didn’t know when life would be “normal” and that felt uneasy to us. Of course, everyone’s opinion is different but this was how we coped and adjusted our plans.:

bride with bridesmaids

puzzle piece guest book

Are you happy with that decision?
“1000%! It was the perfect, intimate wedding we didn’t know we needed/wanted. Our wedding, to us, will forever be the light in a dark time. The skills and strength we used as a team to get thru wedding planning in a pandemic are resources we can tap into later in our relationship when we come across challenging times. There were many of times I cried about the “dream wedding” that felt stolen from us and all the planning and replanning that was required. Bruce was so supportive. On our wedding day, we felt such JOY that we had each other and were getting married…it was the best decision for us that we got married when we did.
I also would like to say we had wonderful vendors that did what they could to make the process easier on us.”

playing cards party favor

What advice would you give to other couples that are trying to figure out what to do about their upcoming wedding?

“I’d say for you and your future husband to make the decision. Everyone is going to have thoughts and opinions, which you can absolutely put into consideration, but Ultimately, it is your day! Wedding etiquette and traditions are out the window, so you can make the best decision for YOU. Whether that means waiting to have your large gathering, eloping in the desert, or a backyard wedding, there isn’t a right way or one way to do it. I’d also recommend making a decision and sticking with it. By making the decision to proceed with our July intimate wedding in early May, we had time to find a livestream vendor and send our guests Wedding Care Packages. Having time to replan was a huge benefit to us.

When our plans changed, I tried to add some sugar to our lemonade. I had wanted to do carved name tags originally, but for a 200 person wedding it wasn’t a cost I could justify. For 16 person wedding in a pandemic – I think I can give myself that joy of costly name tags! I also bought our guest book puzzle prior to our new wedding plan. I wanted to still incorporate it and feel like our original guests were ‘there’. It’s okay to have some fun with the new plans. It might not be the wedding you envisioned, but you can add elements to your new wedding that you couldn’t have before.”

Wedding Inspiration from a Classic Movie

The look and feel of this wedding was actually inspired by the 1954 version of ‘Sabrina’ – with the backdrop of a beautiful San Diego sunset! The ceremony was held in the Garden and was very personal, a close friend of the family was their officiant, and their female friends and family members shared in the Persian sofreh part of the evening as well. Everyone enjoyed cocktail hour with beautiful flamenco guitar music and firelight before heading to the ballroom reception. There they enjoyed great food, prayers and toasts from their family, and lots and lots of dancing.

Coronavirus can’t stop love!

bride and groom, wedding ceremony

Crystal and Joey’s original plan was to have their wedding at the Manchester Grand Hyatt in San Diego July 4, 2020.  They had already postponed it once before and were determined to make it happen this time. With so many of their guests being from out of town, they decided instead to host their wedding virtually from their home to keep everyone safe. They had most of the traditional elements of any wedding, a short, but sweet ceremony exchanging vows, first dance and cake cutting. However, they had to make a few adjustments to make things work. Their wedding arch was made out of a squat rack decorated by the bride with flowers. Crystal had a dress reveal with her bridesmaids, her mother and the mother of the groom by zoom. Speeches from the bride’s family, the grooms family, Matron of Honor and the two co- Best Men had to be pre-recorded.

After the live event concluded, they took pictures on their property outside and with their handsome dog, Kudo. Having Kudo running around was one of their favorite parts during their virtual wedding. He dressed in his best fur, and totally stole the show! They had a really fun time and were truly able to capture and share their love with their families and friends.

bride and groom with best dog

We asked Crystal and Joey if they were happy with their decision to have a virtual wedding.

“Yes, we are very happy with our decision! Most of our guests were traveling internationally, as well as from the east coast, and with border closures, this way we could include everyone from a safe distance, ensuring zero health risks for all. At the end of the day, we considered that the main point of getting married is to celebrate our love for one another, regardless of life’s obstacles or challenges.”

Here’s their advice for any couples out their considering switching to a virtual wedding:

“The advice that we would give a couple who is considering a virtual wedding, is to remember that the day is about you two and your love. Nothing will be perfect, apart from the moment you celebrate your love for each other, wherever that may be. We felt as though we would feel lonely having a virtual wedding, but we learned that it turned out to be quite the opposite. We got to invite 5 times the amount of guests that our original venue could occupy. We also felt that the virtual wedding allowed the camera crew to get different angles and close ups to make it feel much more intimate, and give every guest a front row seat – kind of like a basketball, sometimes sitting at home on your couch watching the big screen is much better than being stuck in the nosebleeds, not knowing what the score is.”

Courtney & Kelsey’s wedding was the perfect blend of simplicity and natural beauty. More of a party than your typical wedding.

What made Lisa & Ami’s wedding unique was venturing away from some of the “forced” elements that happens during typical weddings. They wanted to have a wedding that allowed people to move around and be free to enjoy themselves. They had a bar opened as guests entered and instead of a sit down dinner they had three food stations focusing on their cultural backgrounds, Italian and Indian, and tacos – their favorite food! And rather than a wedding cake, they chose to have a lavish dessert table and cheese station.

Classic and Romantic with Modern Touches

The wedding was classic and romantic, but had elements that made it modern day like the white washed chiavari chairs to the luxurious floral boxes and gold tapered candles. From the white, crisp, delicate blooms, blush pink bridesmaid dresses and the classic tux this sophisticated wedding style was timeless. The bride loved these geode bookends so much that she went to multiple stores to find enough to turn them into her table numbers.

Rustic and Romantic

with an Urban Vibe

From the start, Lydia and Gene knew they wanted their wedding to be intimate and true to themselves. They also wanted to host the wedding as a way to celebrate with their loved ones and thank them for the role they’ve played in their lives.  Their wedding was rustic and romantic in decor, but located downtown, so it still had an urban vibe that fit them well as a couple.

The secret ingredient is always love!

Today’s couples are about personalization and experiences. Crystal and Joey love cooking, so we created the kitchen herb garden being a sense of storytelling to this styled shoot. With various shades of green to reflect the colors found in home garden herbs, a pop of femininity with blush, mauves and a statement blue (which happens to be the Pantone of 2020) which balances it with a masculine tone. A modern, delicate and romantic aesthetic featuring multiple varieties of herbs and plant life with a soft balance of color and tactile textures help provide a feeling of life and love.

April and Nicole’s vision for their day was elegant, but simple, lots of colors and lots of love.

two brides, same sex wedding, sweetheart table

Nicole’s favorite colors are purple and orange and her favorite flower is the calla lily, so they were used throughout their wedding day. The vibe for their day was coastal classic with palm leaves and orchids down the aisle. They wanted their guests to relax with toes in the sand and a drink in their hand. As a symbol of their love, they took pictures on the beach with a rainbow smoke bomb. Love is love!

The Polynesian-themed wedding featured elements to honor the couple’s Chinese, Jewish, and Hawaiian heritages.

Including a ceremony that concluded with a traditional breaking of the glass, and a reception with Asian/Hawaiian-inspired cuisine. The overall theme of the event was “Team Juslie’s Marathon for Life” to celebrate their love for running and endurance athletics; the table placards were designed to look like running bibs. After all, marriage is indeed a marathon, not a sprint!

Persian Jewish Blend

This wedding was a blend of Sarah’s Persian culture and Benjamin’s Jewish background. They were able to find a great rabbi, who not only performed the Jewish ceremony, but incorporated aspects of the Persian wedding ceremony. It’s a true testament to the diversity of Southern California and the fact that two cultures can coexist and complement one another. The blending continued at the reception where they danced until the early hours to American hits, Persian pop, in addition to Jewish music such as the hora.

Beneath the 110 year old fig tree in their family’s backyard is where Jennifer & Michael chose to have their ceremony because it holds a special place in their hearts and provided a beautiful backdrop. They incorporated their love of travel with the use of world maps, the places they’ve traveled together for table names and old suitcases for cards.  They had to create a seating chart with the help of their wedding party the night before the wedding using a world map after the one they ordered never arrived. The chart turned out even better than planned and they had a great time together creating it.

The bride and groom exchanged vows surrounded by close family and friends. Guests then attended a sunset cocktail hour held on the patio at the Kona Kai Resort overlooking the marina. The evening was filled with love and laughter. The evening then took a exciting turn as the live 80’s cover band entered the room and really got the party started. Guests had so much fun as they sang and danced the night away.

Julie and Rob had always dreamed of having the cliff-side experience for their wedding, so they chose Sunset Cliffs for their ceremony location. Fortunately, despite threats of inclimate weather, they were overjoyed that it was mid 70s with a slight ocean breeze the day of the wedding. They even had a flock of pelicans fly over just as the ceremony music began! After a fun and memorable reception at Tom Ham’s Lighthouse, they topped off the evening by treating their guests to a late night taco truck that was a huge hit.

Music was the inspriation for this styled shoot.  Lot of black and white were used and to offset that with a soft pretty  pink. Keeping it more upscale than rock and roll by using brass ornaments and a lot of candles. Many aspects of music such as vinyl records, sheet music, concert tickets, etc. were incorporated. It is fun and whimsical, while still being elegant and classic.

Lorimar Vineyards was the perfect setting for the romantic venue with lots of greenery for Lindsey and Pete. Their ceremony overlooked the stunning vineyards with picturesque mountains in the background. They loved the cool vibe of the reception on the barrel room lawn complete with market lights, fire pits and lots of room to dance.  They treasure the one on one, quiet time they got while taking photos in the orange groves next to the winery in an otherwise whirlwind of a day.

From the beginning, Liv and Nik knew they wanted an outdoor wedding in SoCal and picked the date to be the day after Liv’s parents’ wedding anniversary for good luck. The magical reception took place under the stars and twinkling market lights. There was even a harvest moon that night to help light up the dance floor. To close things out, they had a s’mores bar as part of the dessert menu.

Everyone knows it’s her day. Mom and dad may be paying for it, but it’s her day. You and your groom may be the perfect pair, soul mates and such…but is it really only her day?
Equinox Photo
I say, “Men, it’s your day, too!” Getting the groom involved in different aspects of the wedding in the beginning planning stages helps create entitlement, responsibility and a sense of pride in making good decisions that ultimately will help create a smooth running, successful event. “I enjoy getting the groom into the wedding process through music. Once he realizes his tastes are important and can be included, he gets more relaxed, begins to smile more and he really starts to take more of an interest in the reception,” states Merrylin Brichmann, Disc Jockey and Emcee from Artistic Productions.

Many men are just not going to get involved with décor decisions including linen options, floral concepts and chair choices. They will, however, want to please that special lady they are marrying, by assuming a fair share of the workload.

Many will offer to help with some aspects they personally find more interesting or that might appeal to their immediate family or friends. Music definitely fits this bill as they’ll really want to see their parents or college buddies have a good time and dance. “This is one area he can contribute to and know that it will have a positive effect on his day! People always remember the party and especially seeing the groom on the dance floor,” advises Brichmann.
Equinox Photo
The food choices and the quality might be a little more important to some guys. What guy doesn’t like good food? The availability of certain liquors or beers is probably going to keep him relaxed on several levels, but especially if he knows his friends’ tastes are being satisfied.

The West Coast has an inherent casualness about it when it comes to guys dressing up. Some of that has to do with the climate, but much of it is because men are traditionally not into fashion.

“Many grooms want to start the wedding relationship off on the right foot. They want to make her happy and set the right mark of understanding early on. Many are getting more involved in choosing their wedding day wardrobe,” explains Jerry Klein, owner of A Better Deal Designer Tuxedos and Men’s Suits.

Klein’s operation offers a warehouse, showroom and tailor on site. Grooms can enter and see, feel, touch and try on any and everything.
Bob Hoffman Photography & Video
“Once he sees in the mirror how good he looks, then we have a different type of groom on our hands. It’s a really positive experience. He’s hooked. He’s drawn in,” adds Klein.

As the march toward the big wedding day continues, the photographer can really impact how the groom’s demeanor and excitement level can change. Arguably, as many photographers will attest to, one of the biggest icebreakers for not only getting to know the couple but in getting the groom both relaxed and into the wedding is the engagement shoot.

It’s a nice piece of art for the reception and the future home. It’s also a tool for both the couple to get to know the photographer and vice versa.

“If the bride is the leading lady, then the groom is the leading man. It’s my job to help him create a sense of esteem in front of the camera. Once he sees how cool he looks from the shots I took, then we’re pals. On the wedding day, he enjoys himself more,” shares Adrian Gaynor from Affordable Photography and Video Services. In other words, when the groom gets enthusiastic about things, the results are going to be better. This applies to pictures and everything else surrounding the wedding day.

“The initial consult and the engagement session are a definite opportunity to connect with the couple and especially the groom. If I can get him to let his guard down, then it’s real. If they truly love each other, it shows in the photos,” offers Garrett Delph from Garrett Photography.

Let your husband-to-be keep his wedding aloofness to a certain degree, but suggest to him that these photos will capture his day too. They’ll capture the memories for both of you, both sets of parents, your children and grandchildren. Give him some room, but give him the chance to recognize what this is all about.
Bob Hoffman Photography & Video
Not all grooms are “just along for her day.” In this day and age, given the economy and the number of couples paying for portions (if not all) of the wedding expense, many brides and grooms are taking the overall planning very seriously, especially when it comes to the budget.

Many grooms are very much in the mix of the decision making process financially. Perhaps the groom is the voice of reason when the bride would love to go to Tahiti, but the finances suggest Tahoe. Remember, you can always save for Tahiti for that five-year anniversary.

All men have a sweet tooth. Use it to your advantage when cake shopping. Taste testing cakes and desserts can seriously get the groom involved. Along with giving him a sugar high, he’ll actually have fun with it. After all, it’s his cake to enjoy too.

The groom may be very nervous about the first dance. 150 sets of eyes are dialed in on him and he’s not Fred Astaire. That’s what choreographing the first dance is all about. It puts the couple at ease. It gets the groom looking forward to the first dance and party without stressing a singular three to four minute tradition. He wants to sparkle on the dance floor as well.
432_396_Art_0024IMG_3488
You might even try practicing one of those “You Tube” dance routines. Customize a special dance whereby you start slow and kick into an upbeat song (or several mixed together) to offer up a show for your guests and video. Watch your new husband get into it when the crowd is hooting and hollering. When all is said and done, yes, it’s the bride’s day. Realistically, though, and to be fair, it belongs to other family members, too. The groom deserves a fair share of attention on the big stage for the day.

“From a married guy’s perspective, it’s a privilege and responsibility as a man and a husband to love your wife. At the end of the day, no amount of money, time or energy can substitute for your love and commitment. Love your wife,” says Delph. It takes two to tango in a wedding. In order for the bride to shine, the groom has to participate. That’s also why…gentlemen, it’s your day too!
