ABOUT THE VENUE:
The charm and sophistication of Italy comes to life in North County’s newest wedding venue, Tivoli Villa. Nestled in the hills of Bonsall, this hidden gem is the embodiment of the Italian spirit; every detail of this century-old property has lovingly restored by the team behind San Diego’s most successful wedding venues. You and up to 175 guests can leave the city behind and escape to the Tuscan countryside among the bougainvillea-lined adobe walls and olive tree grove. Say a dreamy “I Do” in front of an ancient oak tree, and sip limoncello with your famiglia next to vintage wrought-iron gates as the hills turn shades of pink from a breathtaking sunset. Pass a platter of fresh pasta from Trademark’s extensive farm-to-table menu. Your romantic day comes to a crescendo as you dance in the moonlight under a blanket of market lights!

A California bride deserves a California bouquet. Flowers native to the Golden State will give your wedding day an authentic California flair. Southern California is home to thousands of native plants. They lend their beauty to the San Diego area, and we have to admit — we’re obsessed by the idea of showcasing native flowers during one of the biggest celebrations of a lifetime. Here are five native flowers perfect for your wedding.
The most obvious choice for your San Diego wedding is the California state flower, the California poppy. This brilliantly colored flower grows all up and down California, from the Oregon border, all the way into Baja California. This poppy lights up a floral arrangement with its color — anywhere from blazing orange to a golden yellow. Yellow poppies are more common in SoCal than they are to the north, so you might consider highlighting a more buttery-colored California poppy in your San Diego bouquets and centerpieces. The grayish-green stems and leaves also lend a stylish aesthetic to the greens in your floral arrangements.
The showy penstemon is a gorgeous California plant. You’ve seen it blooming on its own in gardens and hillsides. These lavender-blue and lilac flowers grow on long stems that lend themselves to be massed into a hand-tied presentation. The showy penstemon blooms through much of the year and should be easy to find in California.
The Pacific Coast iris will give you some different colors to choose — white, lavender, dark purple, even pinks, and burgundies. These gorgeous blooms with their large fluttering petals are a graceful addition to any flower arrangement. Whether you pick them by hand out of your garden, or your florist orders them for you, you won’t lose with the Pacific Coast iris. The long stems lend themselves to a presentation style bouquet. But since there’s only one big bloom to each tall stem, the stems can be trimmed and the flowers arranged in a nosegay or other design.
Some people say this California native looks a little bit like a fried egg. This gorgeous poppy has large, crinkly snow-white petals that surround a cluster of golden-yellow stamens. Once your guests see Matilija poppies at your wedding, they won’t be thinking about bacon (unless you’re serving bacon at the reception of course!). They’ll marvel over the flowers. The Matilija poppy is one of California’s favorite natives. It was in the running for state flower against the California poppy when the decision was made in 1903.
The splendid mariposa lily was also a runner-up in the state flower contest. Take one look and you can see this lily holds its own against the distinct and lovely Matilija and California poppies. This flower blooms in the spring in California. It has three large petals and can be pink, white, lavender blue or purple. This distinctive flower grows on thin stems, making it an easy addition to any bouquet or centerpiece. The only downfall to the splendid mariposa lily — it’s not the most reliable of blooms, Horticulturists say flowering takes up a lot of energy for this plant, so a yearly bloom isn’t a sure thing. Check with your florist on its availability.
Choosing native plants is not just a style choice. It’s also the choice of eco-conscious brides, who want their wedding celebrations to leave a smaller footprint behind. Since they’re easy to grow here, you won’t have to spend a fortune on them. Luckily, in California, you don’t have to choose between being stylish, cost conscious, or environmentally responsible. The Golden State is home to lots of beautiful options.

The outdoors and the African savannah was the inspiration for this styled shoot. The greens and tan you see in the trees and dried grass. The orange, yellow and rust of the sunset. The focal point was the gorgeous arch that had the tans in the pampas grass with the sunset colors in the flowers. All of the flowers, including the bouquet, had pampas grass to tie it all together.

Beneath the 110 year old fig tree in their family’s backyard is where Jennifer & Michael chose to have their ceremony because it holds a special place in their hearts and provided a beautiful backdrop. They incorporated their love of travel with the use of world maps, the places they’ve traveled together for table names and old suitcases for cards. They had to create a seating chart with the help of their wedding party the night before the wedding using a world map after the one they ordered never arrived. The chart turned out even better than planned and they had a great time together creating it.

Music was the inspriation for this styled shoot. Lot of black and white were used and to offset that with a soft pretty pink. Keeping it more upscale than rock and roll by using brass ornaments and a lot of candles. Many aspects of music such as vinyl records, sheet music, concert tickets, etc. were incorporated. It is fun and whimsical, while still being elegant and classic.

From the beginning, Liv and Nik knew they wanted an outdoor wedding in SoCal and picked the date to be the day after Liv’s parents’ wedding anniversary for good luck. The magical reception took place under the stars and twinkling market lights. There was even a harvest moon that night to help light up the dance floor. To close things out, they had a s’mores bar as part of the dessert menu.

No matter which approach you prefer, there’s a floral look for you. Read on as local florists tell San Diego Style Weddings their trend picks for a variety of floral styles.
Couture
The couture bride is “looking to stop hearts when she walks in,” says Christine Early of Flowers Forever, noting these weddings often feature striking black with many décor embellishments including sparkles, sequins, rhinestones, chandeliers, ribbons and pearls.
Haydee Dela Cruz of Haydee’s Creative Flowers agrees, noting couture brides like “bling bling.”
Centerpieces are often tall. Dela Cruz says bouquets are “full and lush” frequently in muted colors like white, nude and blush.
A metallic color scheme with lots of gold and silver details is very on point for couture weddings right now.
Boho
Combining a 60’s and 70’s vibe with medieval romance, the bohemian look is all about bringing nature into the wedding.
Penn Bryan of Flowers of Point Loma says boho couples are “more relaxed” and focus on what’s “simple and easy.” That often means loose, cascading blooms, not formal, structured designs.
There’s lots of greenery, garland and headpieces too.
Flowers for boho brides are “more natural, have more green texture and use succulents,” says Lisa Whitebread of Designworks, who incorporates lots of eucalyptus and David Austin roses into her floral designs.
She says boho centerpieces are displayed in antique-like containers and wooden boxes. It’s trendy for garland used for altarpieces to be repurposed into centerpieces.
While the color scheme for boho weddings is muted, there’s often a pop of color.
“The boho bride is lots of fun,” says Dela Cruz, who often crafts hair crowns and dream catchers for her boho clients. She calls the look “fun and a little rustic too.”
Modern
This sophisticated bride knows exactly what she wants: a tailored look. Think clean lines, geometric designs and symmetry.
“Colors are bold. Either all white or all red or yellow and black,” says Early, explaining modern brides like flowers to make a trendy statement. “Strong, striking color combos.”
Whitebread, who says a green and white color combo is trendy, explains modern brides, are about “making each ingredient count.” These couples are opting to use a few statement flowers, “like one giant amaryllis,” instead of many blooms.
Centerpieces are displayed in nontraditional containers with lots of greenery. The refined look often includes candles.
Destination
“Most destination weddings are not big,” says Bryan, who gets requests from destination couples for tropical flowers like plumeria, as well as succulents for desert I Do’s.
Many destination brides coming to San Diego are choosing a beachy, tropical vibe, like a blue color scheme with white and purple blooms. Florals and décor are typically minimal. For example, often the bride carries a bouquet and guests wear leis.
“The San Diego vibe is a little bit vintage, boho and innovative,” says Whitebread, who finds many destination brides love using orchids in their wedding flowers.
Classic
Classic couples embrace “grand tradition and romance, hand crafted details, lavish décor and simple color pallets, like white and navy with gold,” says Nadine Zines of Studio Fleurish.
Focused on tradition, classic brides tend to like a very coordinated, cohesive look.
They often choose “classic round or classic cascading bouquets with roses or orchids, usually based on their color scheme,” says Early.
Dela Cruz’ classic brides frequently use calla lilies. She says the look isn’t fussy or textured. Instead, it’s “soft and romantic.”
Hipster
“Expect the unexpected,” says Zines, describing hipster couples. “Anything Goes.”
Hipster couples tend to be young, creative, minimalistic and into art and music.
Early says the hipster look generally applies to the whole wedding, not just the couple. While the style has many interpretations, it’s always personal to the newlyweds.
“It’s all about individual style,” says Early. “The hipster is anti-traditional and tends to be theme-y.”
She’s seen a rockabilly approach with round flower bouquets popular decades ago; a barn wedding with sunflowers; and a retro wedding with pink carnations.
Bryan’s hipster weddings have featured daisies and roses, as well as herbs. She says the feeling of a hipster wedding is “a little more relaxed and free.”
Wrist corsages with jewelry, mixed metal and fabric are in vogue for Whitebread’s hipster brides, who she says often are “into more art, color and off the wall” designs.
Second Chances
When it’s not a first wedding, couples tend to be more laidback. The celebration often focuses on a shorter ceremony and a longer party.
Zines says second chance weddings are “nontraditional, uniquely styled” to reflect the couple’s lifestyle and blended family.
The current trend has many second chance couples choosing neutral colors in flowers like calla lilies and casa blanca, as well as greenery and plants that can be repurposed after the wedding day.
With second chance couples, “it’s not about the details of the day,” says Dela Cruz. “It’s about the meaning of the day and doing things on their own terms.”
For almost as long as there have been weddings, flowers have played an important role in the celebration. In selecting the flowers for your bridal bouquet, you’ll want to consider blooms that best express your personality, complement your wedding gown and tie in with the general look and theme you’ve selected for the day. Here is a guide to the different styles of bouquets available to help you get the perfect bouquet for your big day.
CASCADE
A cascade bouquet, also called a “shower” bouquet, is very formal and the most traditional bridal bouquet. Like a waterfall, this bouquet flows and is designed to gently cascade downward. This bouquet is often designed with larger flowers at the top, using smaller blooms as it begins to taper down and land gracefully over the bride’s hands. Lisianthus, lilies of the valley, stephanotis, dendrobium orchids and other smaller flowers are commonly used in this shape of bouquet, along with accents of trailing ivy, vinca, or other delicate greenery. If you are wearing a full-skirted or ball gown-style wedding dress, this shape of bouquet may work for you. However, if you are a very petite woman, another shape of bouquet may be a better choice.
COMPOSITE
If you’re looking for a truly unique look in your wedding flowers and you can’t find a particular variety of flower that appeals to you, a composite bouquet might be the perfect choice. This intricate creation is composed by taking individual petals from flowers (such as amaryllis, roses, or lilies), wiring them together on a single stem and creating the look of one giant bloom. This style of bouquet would be the ideal complement to a simple gown with little ornamentation, or one with a very sleek silhouette.
HAND-TIED
For this more relaxed style of bouquet, a variety of blooms that tie in with the wedding theme are wired or loosely gathered together and tied with a satin ribbon or a combination of ribbon and lace. Some popular flower varieties for this style of bouquet are French tulips, day lilies, coneflowers, purple statice, lisianthus, stem roses and other hardy garden flowers. With its natural, just-picked from the garden look, this bouquet is a nice choice for an informal wedding.
NOSEGAY
A combination of simple style and elegance, the nosegay is a densely packed mound of flowers and greenery. When choosing flowers for a nosegay, compact blooms such as roses, tulips, peonies, hydrangeas, calla lilies and ranunculus work best. These blooms may be mixed, or for a simple look, you can stick to just one variety. An ideal choice for any style of wedding, a nosegay bouquet can be dressed up or down depending on the flowers you choose and how it’s tied together, with a wire, ribbon or other stem treatment.
PAGEANT
The pageant bouquet, also known as a “presentation” bouquet (think of the flowers presented to Miss America when she is crowned) is a bunch of long-stemmed flowers that the bride carries cradled in her arms. A pageant bouquet can be as simple or elaborate as you’d like, depending on the style and formality of your wedding. Some of the best floral choices for this type of bouquet are those with long stems or branches such as, calla lilies, roses, delphinium, tuberose, lisianth, or French tulips. The blooms are then secured together with a beautiful satin or fabric ribbon. However, when selecting the flowers for your pageant bouquet, make sure the blooms are not longer than what can fit comfortably along the length of your lower arm.
POMANDER
A less-traditional bouquet, the pomander is a small, compact bloom-covered ball that is usually four to six inches in diameter and then suspended from a ribbon that is worn around the wrist. This is a good choice for the bride who wants her hands to be free. A classic floral choice for a pomander is roses, but it may also be made with hydrangeas, delphinium, dendrobium orchids, or any other flowers suggested by your floral designer. While a pomander may not be the look for you, it’s an adorable alternative for junior bridesmaids or flower girls. Just remember to have it sized accordingly so its shape is appropriate for their age and size.
POSY
Similar to the nosegay but smaller in size, the posy bouquet is perfect for a petite bride with delicate hands, or for a bridesmaid’s bouquet. When selecting flowers for a posy, those with smaller blooms are ideal, such as spray roses, grape hyacinths, ranunculus and pansies. However, some large-headed flowers such as gardenias or peonies can also make quite an impact.
ROUND
The classic round bridal bouquet is usually compiled of large flowers that are loosely arranged. This shape and style of bouquet is a good choice for a formal wedding, or for the bride who wants a look less conspicuous than a cascade bouquet, yet bolder than a simple nosegay. Many varieties of flowers will work in the round bouquet, but some popular choices are roses, tulips, lilacs, stephanotis, hydrangeas, day lilies, peonies and seeded eucalyptus.
