Saying ‘I do’ in Idyllic Italy

Q & A with Federica Beni of Federica Beni Events

There’s something synonymous about Italy and romance — it simply embodies amore. For couples looking for international elegance on their wedding day, Italy is a dream destination. Here, Italian wedding planner Federica Beni makes that dream a reality.

SDSW: What is it about Italy that draws American couples to get married there? FB: Italy offers the rare combination of timeless culture, extraordinary beauty, and a deep food-and-wine tradition that turns every celebration into something richer, warmer, and more memorable. Guests don’t simply attend an event; they share meaningful days together, immersed in art, history, flavors, and the unmistakable rhythm of la dolce vita.

What makes Italy truly unmatched is its variety. In one country, couples can choose between romantic castles, ancient villas, chic hamlets, elegant farmhouses, Renaissance palaces, and exclusive resorts, each with a distinct personality. Furthermore, the scenery is just as diverse: sea views, lakefront settings, rolling hills, and mountain panoramas, all capable of framing a wedding in a way that feels deeply personal and unforgettable.

SDSW: What is the biggest difference between an Italian wedding and a traditional American wedding? FB: In Italy, a wedding is never just a single day. It’s a 360-degree immersive experience that often takes place over an entire weekend. It’s the perfect place for a destination wedding because when guests travel overseas, the experience must be truly worth the journey. Couples are no longer thinking only about a beautiful event, they want to give their loved ones something unforgettable. They want them to feel the soul of the place: the rhythm of local life, the authenticity of the culture, the warmth of genuine hospitality, extraordinary food and wine, and those rare moments that stay with you long after the flight home. A wedding in Italy is an emotional journey that becomes a lifelong memory.

SDSW: What are some unexpected factors couples should consider when planning a wedding in Italy? FB: The most common is weather. Most couples who choose Italy imagine endless sunshine. Understandably so. In the collective imagination, Italy is synonymous with beauty, light, and outdoor celebrations, so a Plan B is often treated as optional or not considered at all.

However, no one can guarantee perfect skies, even in the height of summer. We never plan a wedding without a strong Plan B — not because we expect rain, but because we need to protect the experience. When every detail matters, contingency is not pessimism, it’s professionalism.

SDSW: What is one piece of advice you always give American brides who are dreaming of getting married in Italy? FB: My first advice is always the same: Hire your planner before you book anything else, especially the venue. Too often, couples secure a location first, relying only on what the venue presents. A thorough and wise planner protects the guest experience, the working conditions for vendors, and the integrity of the celebration.

The same principle applies to every other vendor. A strong planner knows who is truly talented, reliable, and consistent. Her role is not simply to create beauty and bring couples’ vision to life, but to ensure they invest wisely and get true value for every decision they make.
